Chapter Six

THERE WAS A deep furrow in the sand where the small female had landed heavily after falling from the top of her stagecoach roof. Slowly the numbness which had come over her after her violent encounter with the ground began to ease. A strange sensation flowed through her from head to toe. With it came pain. A thousand fire ants could not have done a better job at tormenting her bruised body. She could taste blood in her mouth and then her hands began to sting. Sally blinked hard and looked at her digits. They were the color of raw steak where her rifle had been torn from her hands by the stranger’s bullet. She tried to count her fingers but could not focus clearly.

Although stunned the feisty female knew exactly what was happening. She had heard the sound of the gun being cocked only seconds after the shadow of her adversary had crossed over her. Sally knew he was standing over her with his six-shooter probably aimed at her helpless body.

Squirrel Sally had waited for the gun to be fired for what felt like hours but in truth was only a few moments. Her weary mind wondered if she would hear the bullet that ended her existence, or was it true that no one ever hears the bullet that kills them?

Was it true?

She felt that soon that question would be answered.

The man was motionless, like a statue. She stared at the shadow as blood trickled from the corners of her mouth. He had not moved a muscle since coming to a halt beside her. For some reason the figure that loomed over her did not squeeze his trigger.

Why?

Why did he not end her misery? Was he torturing her? Was this some sort of sick game he was playing with her? Was he the cat and she the mouse?

He was going to make her wait until he chose the time to fire his weapon. Maybe that was how he liked it. It was power, she thought. The hunter always had the power over the hunted. It was what some folks enjoyed. They did not kill for any true reason, but simply because they could. It was power. Power over those who were unable to defend themselves. Unable or not allowed to defend themselves.

Sally’s mind raced as it began to pound like an Apache war drum. He still had not squeezed the trigger.

Was this man one of those who enjoyed hurting others? A creature who got his sick pleasure from torturing his victims before he blew their heads apart?

Was that to be the final indignity she would have to suffer? Maybe he wanted her to beg for her life? If so, he would die of old age before hearing her beg, she thought. Then a more troubling idea filled her pounding mind. Perhaps he had other plans for her. More carnal plans. She was a lone female, after all. A lone female in a land where women were mighty scarce.

Fear raced through her.
